Tea and Cake, solely a British Tradition?

What is Tea and Cake?

I looked up Tea and cake expecting to find huge swathes of description on how this should be done, but, all I found was Afternoon Tea. My last Blog touched on High Teas and I won’t dwell on that, but it was interesting the response we had. My take on Tea and Cake is an indulgence that can be taken anytime of the day……..

Elevenses

I was expecting word check to pop up on elevenses, what might you ask are elevenses? Well it’s that in-between time, between breakfast and a late lunch. It’s that little hunger gap that has to be filled. What better than to grab a cup, mug whatever your preference and a lovely slice of cake. Our base as mentioned before is Chai Delicatessen in Mumbles, and it’s amazing the amount of people that come in around eleven o’clock for a slice of cake and tea. There is no one preference for cake as we normally have about twelve different types on the go. From traditional Victoria Sponge right through to the exotic Nectarine, white chocolate yogurt and pistachio. Of course with a cup of our Gower Tea.

Tea and Cake, solely a British Tradition?

Is tea and cake , solely a British Tradition, our original question and I looked this up and found the following I quote“Kaffee und Kuchen” is an essential German family ritual. It resembles the posh “afternoon tea” that English ladies and gentlemen stereotypically enjoy with scones, small sandwiches and pastries. In Germany, it offers cake, usually with sweet whipped cream, and a cup of coffe.

Now surely we harp back to the High Tea again and unlike the British, who I’ve discovered go for the lighter cakes like Victoria Sandwich or scone, the Germans tend to go for the heavier Chocolate Cake or Strudels. The Brits drink Tea the Germans predominantly coffee with their cake.

My Conclusion

Yes I do believe we Brits hold the rights to say Traditional British Tea and Cake, enjoy yours with a cup of Gower Tea.
